Listening to Your Intuition

In the hustle and bustle of life, amidst the cacophony of external voices and expectations, we can often find ourselves drifting away from the most important guide we have - our own inner wisdom.

If you struggle to trust your internal guide, consider how it could be to have more trust in yourself. How do we lose this innate sense of trust, and perhaps most importantly, how do we cultivate it once again?

Trusting oneself goes beyond mere confidence; we are tapping into our intuition and honoring our deepest knowing. We can have a subtle feeling of knowing something without concrete evidence to back it up. Yet, in the midst of life's chaos, we often lose touch with this inner compass.

One common way we lose trust in ourselves is through experiences of trauma, especially in childhood. When we grow up in environments where our safety is compromised, where emotional manipulation and gaslighting are the norm, we learn to distrust our own perceptions. Instead, we internalize the narratives fed to us by others, even if they contradict our own experiences.

Self-blame becomes a survival skill, a way to make sense of the world when the person we rely on to protect us fails to do so. We learn to feel responsible for what is beyond our control, fostering a deep-seated belief that we are fundamentally flawed. This not only erodes our trust in ourselves but also exacerbates anxiety as we seek to control the uncontrollable.

As we carry these survival patterns into adulthood, they manifest in our relationships. Whether we are appeasing an abusive partner or continually prioritizing others' needs over our own, we find ourselves trapped in a cycle of self-neglect. People-pleasing becomes second nature, as we fear abandonment and prioritize external validation over our own well-being.

Cultivating Trust in Ourselves:

Reconnecting with our inner wisdom is a journey that requires patience, compassion, and courage. This journey begins by acknowledging the validity of our own experiences, feelings, and needs. Here are some steps to start reclaiming this trust:

1. Self-Compassion and Awareness: Recognize that your past experiences have shaped your present reality, and be gentle with yourself. Cultivate self-awareness by tuning in to your emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations without judgment.

2. Self-Care and Boundaries: Prioritize self-care by attending to your physical and emotional needs. Set boundaries in your relationships to protect your well-being and honor your own autonomy.

3. Mindfulness and Introspection: Practice mindfulness to quiet the external noise and turn inward. Engage in activities that promote introspection, such as meditation, journaling, or simply spending time in nature.

4. Assertiveness and Authenticity: Practice expressing your needs and desires, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Embrace authenticity by speaking your truth and advocating for yourself in relationships and situations.

5. Patience and Persistence: Remember that rebuilding trust in ourselves takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself as you navigate this journey, and celebrate each step forward.

Trusting oneself is not a destination but a continual process of self-discovery and growth. By reconnecting with our inner wisdom, we reclaim our power, our autonomy, and our ability to navigate life with authenticity and resilience. Practice tuning out the external noise and listening to the voice within.
