Boundaries as Self-care

How often and in what ways do you prioritize care for yourself? Central to a self-care practice is tuning in to our inner experience and recognizing what we want and need. We can then make intentional choices, which includes setting boundaries for the benefit of our emotional and physical well-being.

Setting limits simultaneously creates opportunities. When you choose to not respond to work emails over the weekend you have more space for relaxation and personal connections. Similarly, limiting a text conversation with a friend to 15 minutes may allow for more meaningful in-person interactions later.

Consider how different activities such as deep conversations, cognitively-engaging tasks, or outdoor adventures energize or deplete your internal resources. By aligning these activities with the times when you feel most available, you can ensure that they contribute positively to your life.

If setting boundaries feels challenging for you, consider what may cause this to be difficult. Many of us have been conditioned from a young age to prioritize others' feelings and needs over our own. This pattern can persist into adulthood, making it difficult to be assertive in relationships. However, boundaries are essential for relationships to be healthy, and everyone deserves respect and consideration.

As you learn to listen to your inner voice, you'll discover what brings you relaxation, fulfillment, and joy. By prioritizing your physical, emotional, and social needs, you can cultivate a life that's balanced, fulfilling, and aligned with your values. Remember, self-care isn't selfish; it's a necessary investment in your overall well-being.
