Honoring Your Relationship Strengths

When couples seek out counseling, there is usually a challenge that has led them to do so. Even the most loving, wonderful relationships experience difficulty at times. Part of my approach as a therapist is to hold the awareness of what is going well and what makes the relationship strong. When we identify your strengths as a couple, we can utilize these aspects as we address the difficulties you are navigating.

This approach is beneficial for couples outside of therapy sessions as well. Acknowledging where you and your partner shine together can strengthen your relationship and deepen your understanding and appreciation of each other. Strengths can be based in shared values, mutual interests, and individual qualities that balance your partnership. What are your strengths as a couple?

Consider the areas of your lives that are enhanced because you show up together. Is there a sport or hobby you both love? Perhaps you have found success and joy in collaborative business pursuits or other creative endeavors, such as house projects. Some couples are skilled in managing crises together. Do you both love to travel and make great adventure partners? Some couples may be at their best as a fantastic co-parenting team or when co-hosting social gatherings.

If you and your partner are strong in collaboration and co-creation, it’s likely you have some qualities that balance each other. Perhaps one partner tends to be spontaneous and the other is an effective planner. One may easily identify short-term goals while the other may more easily hold the big picture. Consider how the differences between you are beneficial for your mutual stability and fulfillment.

Whether or not you and your partner are experiencing difficulties, appreciating what makes your relationship great will reinforce the strength of your relationship and make you even more resilient when challenges do arise.
