Gender-affirming Erotic Expression
Are your erotic experiences constrained by what you perceive to be expected or appropriate for your gender or sex? Gendering specific sexual behaviors may be more or less important for each individual. If you experience specific sexual behaviors and dynamics through a gendered expression, this may feel limiting or could be empowering. If you were not worried about judgment from yourself or your partner, would you want to engage in different sexual dynamics or behaviors that would feel like a more authentic expression of your gender?
Sexual experiences that are gender-affirming allow us to authentically give and receive pleasure, which deepens our connection with our partner and ourselves. It is not uncommon, however, to feel reluctant in discussing your gendered sexual expression with your partner, since this requires significant emotional vulnerability. You might fear that your partner will judge you or be unaccepting of your forms of erotic expression. If you and your partner are able to have meaningful conversations about your desires, you can decide together how you can share erotic experiences that offer a profound connection between you.
On the other hand, engaging in sexual experiences that are not gender affirming can often lead to distress. Although we may experience physical arousal in these instances, the emotions associated with the experience can generate feelings of deep inner discomfort, creating a misalignment between our emotional and physical responses. If our physical response to sexual stimuli does not align with our emotional or psychological state, we are experiencing arousal non-concordance.
Just because our bodies may physically respond or become aroused does not mean that the experience is affirming or consensual. True consent entails actively seeking and obtaining enthusiastic agreement from all parties involved. It requires creating an environment where individuals feel that their desires, sexual expressions, and gender identities are valid.
Through gender-affirming sexual experiences, we create a space of authenticity and vulnerability that fosters deep arousal and connection with our partners. If this topic feels complex and important in your relationship, consider whether processing with a sex therapist would be beneficial.
