ADHD & Sexual Intimacy
ADHD symptoms can manifest in many ways, including how we experience sexual intimacy.
Distractibility
A highly active mind can increase distractibility during sex and may interfere with getting in the mood. If sex is not the object of desire or racing thoughts are a barrier, sex can lose its richness. However, the ADHD capacity to hyperfocus when interested can allow all distractions to fall away and increase the intensity of pleasure.
If you want to reignite your erotic life but feel impeded by lack of desire, consider removing distractions and exploring what might make sex more appealing. When sex starts to feel monotonous or routine, consider what excites you and your partner. Experimenting with intensity, sensations, pacing, and techniques may reinvigorate erotic experiences, though being present is more important than variety.
If you enjoy sex but find your mind wandering, practices that draw your attention back and ground you in the present can be beneficial. Mindfulness and embodiment techniques help channel your energy into your body and in the present moment. Focusing on your partner’s responses or your own bodily sensations can also be a way to anchor into the moment. Perhaps there is an erotic fantasy that aligns with the intimacy you are sharing with your partner that can help to hold your attention in the experience as well.
Timing
Perhaps sexual desire is not an issue for you, and the challenge is for you and your partner to both have interest in sex at the same time. Often people with ADHD have time blindness, may act impulsively, and value spontaneity, which can be rewarding if spontaneous desire occurs when one’s partner is available and open to sexual intimacy as well. If you are unaware of how the timing of your initiation is aligned or misaligned with your partner’s likelihood of being interested, reflect on whether you are expressing interest in sex when your partner does not have time for sex and is instead focused on leaving the house for work or needing sleep. If you are initiating at a time when your partner feels open to sex, time blindness can contribute to a pleasurable and immersive experience.
Reflecting on how aspects of ADHD inform our sexual experiences is an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and deepen in communication with our partner. Be curious and non-judgmental as you and your partner discover what changes can increase the quality of sexual intimacy. Honor your own needs and those of your partner regarding what feels safe and interesting to you both each step of the way.
